Eddie Howe roasted by Celtic fans as Parkhead club 'dodged a bullet' after Newcastle United humiliation

Celtic fans feel they've dodged a managerial bullet after watching Eddie Howe get knocked out of the FA Cup by lowly Cambridge United.

The former Bournemouth boss was in talks to take over at Parkhead for several months, before the deal dramatically collapsed.

Celtic turned to Yokohama F Marinos boss Ange Postecoglou and the Australian has become an instant fan favourite after winning the League Cup last month.

Howe eventually took over at Newcastle following the takeover of the club by a Saudi Arabian fund, with the Magpies battling against relegation.

In nine games so far though he's managed just a single win, putting the Toon in a difficult position despite an expected January spending spree.

And on Saturday things reached a nadir as Howe's side were beaten 1-0 at home in the FA Cup by League Two side Cambridge United.

That's had Celtic fans and more reflecting on what could have been, with many glad in hindsight that the Englishman opted to turn the job down.

One wrote: "I wanted Eddie Howe to manage Celtic but, with the beauty of hindsight, I think the club have dodged a bullet. Don’t see him being Newcastle manager for anymore than 18 months."

Another user said: "Love that Eddie Howe guy. Wish Celtic had signed him.. NOT!!"

A Leicester supporter insisted: "Celtic massively dodged a bullet with Eddie Howe, (Steve) Bruce would have them (Newcastle) mid table by now for sure, so many deluded fans."

One Twitter used commented, "Think it's safe to say a serious heavy artillery bullet has been dodged by Celtic when it comes to Eddie Howe" while Sean said,"Eddie Howe turning down Celtic is the best thing to ever happen."

Another wrote: "Would like to thank Eddie Howe for bottling his move to Celtic in the summer. Thank f*** we ended up with Big Ange."

A Celic fan added: "All of us who wanted Eddie Howe gladly taking our medicine! Ange is made for Celtic football club."

And a Hearts fan concurred as he wrote: "Celtic dodged a bullet with Eddie Howe! That Newcastle team are honking and think he will get them relegated no matter what they do this month."

One joked: "When Eddie Howe was linked with Celtic in the summer, people in England said he shouldn’t go there because he’d be playing diddy teams every week. Now I understand why that would have been a problem!"

Another added: "Never have I been happier to have missed out on a manager. Eddie Howe may well be a good coach and end up being successful at Newcastle but he was never big enough to handle the pressure at a club like Celtic."

And one Celtic fan concluded: "Eddie Howe struggling at Newcastle. Terrible result today and out the FA Cup. Putting on a good training session is one thing but going to a huge club like Newcastle or Celtic is a culture shock if your previous experience is at a real family club like Bournemouth."
