Eddie Howe reacts as Michael Emenalo claimed to be 'close' to Director of Football role

Eddie Howe says he will "embrace" the arrival of a director of football at Newcastle United - insisting it can only help the Magpies improve as a club.

Howe worked hand in hand with technical director Richard Hughes at AFC Bournemouth but did not bring him to Tyneside when he was appointed as boss this month.

Since then Newcastle have been linked with former director of football Michael Emenalo but Howe revealed he has not held any conversations about any impending appointment with co-owner Amanda Staveley.

Howe said: "Richard Hughes was technical director, in effect a sporting director.

"That worked really well

"It is essential you have a structure that works for your club.

"You need people in positions that can help you manage.

"It's not my decision and not my call.

"If it did happen it's something I'd embrace."

When asked if those talks had taken place on Emenalo, Howe said: "No, not yet."

Howe says that the dynamics of a director of football don't worry him.

He said: "I never signed a player I didn't want but it was always a collaborative effort.

"We made some good signings, some that weren't so good.

"You need to get more right than wrong and if you went through them at Bournemouth we did.

"Sometimes the negative ones get highlighted more than the positive ones.

"You can't be everywhere watching targets.

"The people around you need to do good work".
