Eddie Howe odds-on favourite to become Celtic manager in blow for Newcastle United fans

Eddie Howe is the new odds-on favourite to replace Neil Lennon as Celtic manager, which will come as a bitter blow to Newcastle United fans.

The 43-year-old, who left Bournemouth last summer after more than a decade in the dugout on the south coast - across two spells either side of a stint at Burnley - saw his price tumble with the bookies overnight.

Indeed, the former Cherries player and manager is now 8/11 to step into the hot-seat at Celtic Park as they target an instant response to Rangers' first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.

Celtic are currently being guided by the experienced John Kennedy on an interim basis.

But while Howe has become the new favourite as far as the bookies are concerned, there are other candidates to step into the managerial position vacated by Lennon earlier this month.

Kennedy is priced-up at 5/2 as things stand, while former Manchester United captain and Sunderland manager Roy Keane remains a little further back at 5/1.

Links between Howe and Celtic are sure to alert the attention of Newcastle supporters, though, as he remains one of the fanbase's favoured options to replace under-fire Steve Bruce.

The betting market for that position remains open - despite Mike Ashley offering his public support to Bruce in the aftermath of the crushing 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

It's a result which left the Magpies firmly in a battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

When players return from international duty next week, they will only hold a two-point advantage on third-bottom Fulham - although they do have a game in hand on Scott Parker's side.

Amid links with former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder (2/1), odds-on Celtic favourite Howe is currently being tipped as an 8/1 shot to arrive at St James' Park.
