Eddie Howe learns dugout fate for Arsenal clash as Newcastle United deliver major update

Eddie Howe will be in the managerial dugout at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal host Newcastle United on Saturday.

Howe had contracted Covid-19 last week, ruling him out his first game as Magpies boss, watching from a hotel room as his side played out a 3-3 draw with Brentford at St. James' Park.

The former Bournemouth head coach has been unable to attend training this week, leaving assistant Jason Tindall to take charge in his absence.

As per our sister site Chronicle Live, the Tyneside-based club were preparing for Tindall to lead out the team over the weekend and the Englishman faced the media on Friday morning before the club confirmed that Howe had returned a negative Covid test earlier in the day.

"Newcastle United can confirm that Eddie Howe will be in the dugout at Arsenal after returning a negative Covid test this morning", a club's spokesperson said.

The Gunners will hope to continue their fine form against the Magpies, having won 17 of their last 18 encounters, with their last home loss coming back in 2010 when Andy Carroll netted the only goal of the game.

However, Mikel Arteta's side were on the receiving end of a bitterly disappointing 4-0 loss to Liverpool last week, ending a 10-match unbeaten run that had seen them climb up to fifth in the Premier League, two months after being rooted to the bottom of the pile following a torrid start to the season.

Despite last week's defeat, the north London outfit are still just three points behind fourth-placed West Ham United - who take on reigning champions Manchester City at the Etihad stadium on Sunday afternoon.
