Eddie Howe introduces "leadership group" at Newcastle United with Callum Wilson handed key role

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has revealed that the club have reintroduced a player committee at Benton.

The Magpies opted for a similar approach in 2009 after relegation when stars like Kevin Nolan, Nicky Butt, Shola Ameobi and Steve Harper formed a player's group to help support Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood on their way to winning the Coca-Cola Championship.

Howe has now turned to not only existing captain Jamaal Lascelles but also Callum Wilson, who skippered the Magpies to 1-1 draw against Norwich City at St James' Park this week, as well as other squad members.

In the build-up to the latest crucial clash, as Burnley arrive on Tyneside this week Howe said: "We’ve created a leadership group within the squad, so that's something that we’ve really worked hard on since we’ve come in, in terms of building leaders within the team, allowing those leaders to really influence the group.

"I won’t go into too much detail, but Callum’s obviously one of those guys that the players really respect and see as one of the leaders in the team, and it was a pleasure to give him the armband.

"I thought he led the team really, really well."

Howe also underlined the importance of the previous vice-captain Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez to his new squad.

He said: "Sometimes it’s difficult when you’re the focal point in the team.

"His messages were getting back through the team, and also when you add Fede and Jonjo through the spine of the team, on Tuesday we had some really good talkers.

"I think they definitely helped us, in that difficult moment, to get the result we did."
