Eddie Howe hints at January loan exit with Newcastle squad still overloaded with goalkeepers

Eddie Howe has says he intends to "evaluate" his squad size in January after inheriting a roster that contains four registered goalkeepers.

It may seem like an eternity ago but back in August, Steve Bruce said he was forced to make a decision to include Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie in his squad due to injuries.

That meant Woodman's loan to AFC Bournemouth was cancelled while the player prepared to jet out for pre-season in Spain with the Cherries before losing his place early in the campaign at Newcastle.

When asked about the goalkeepers, Howe said: "In terms of the goalkeepers we have got a really talented group of keepers.

"It was unfortunate that both the experienced goalkeepers were injured.

"And it probably meant that opportunities for one of the younger guys to go on loan was then potentially stopped.

"That is something we will evaluate in January because we don't want to harm anyone's development."

United's new boss has already changed keeper once in his first three games when naming Dubravka in the starting line-up against Arsenal during the 2-0 defeat.

However, Dubravka's decision-making was questioned by pundits against Norwich in the 1-1 draw when he failed to hold a cross to allow Teemu Pukki to crack home an equaliser.

However, without the Slovakia international's last gasp save in the last throes of stoppage time, Newcastle may have emerged with nothing.
