Eddie Howe handed Celtic transfer warning as pundit issues squad overhaul 'control' plea

Former goalkeeper Alan Rough insists incoming boss Eddie Howe must be handed full control of Celtic's transfer policy.

The former Bournemouth boss looks set to be confirmed as Neil Lennon's replacement at Celtic Park in the coming days and take charge in the summer.

It has also been reported that he would like to recruit Richard Hughes, who he worked with at the Cherries, as director of football.

The pair built a squad that romped to the English Championship title before enjoying five years together in the Premier League.

Former Parkhead goalkeeper urged Dermot Desmond and incoming chief executive Dominic McKay to hand control of transfers over to Howe and Hughes.

He told the PLZ Football Show that Nick Hammond's input hindered Lennon during the Premiership charge this term and Howe must be trusted to bring in his own recruits.

He said: "I think the fans need to know who is bringing these players in.

"I think the problem with Lenny [Neil Lennon] was that people were saying to him 'was he the guy you brought in?'

"This new manager, I think he will be calling the shots, and if he is bringing his mate in they have got to work in tandem.

"We can't have this that a player isn't any good and then someone else gets the blame.

"He needs to be in sole control of the players who are coming in, because there are so many going to be going out and coming in."
