Eddie Howe explains transformation of Joelinton since he took Newcastle United job

Eddie Howe has explained how he has managed to transform Joelinton into a midfield revelation.

The Brazilian was signed as a centre-forward and handed the iconic number 9 jersey on Tyneside but is carving out a career in the engine room under the new head coach.

Joelinton was man of the match against Manchester United and looked on fire at times as he ran the game.

Howe said: "When we initially came in we thought Joelinton would play as a number 10, a second striker.

"We went down to 10 men against Norwich and reshuffled and played him as an eight and he was brilliant defensively.

"He has a tactical understanding.

"From then on I thought he had technical capabilities.

"You’ve seen tonight he’s been brilliant defensively.

"His work-rate and the amount of ground he covers is incredible.

"He’s a real team player. Such ability as well. He can only get better."

Howe is expected to hand Joelinton a key role in the remaining fixtures and added: "His attitude, work rate and energy are top level.

"His technique and ability to find space and control the ball in tight areas is of the highest level.

"I love the lads to bits. I’m really glad he’s performing so well."
