Eddie Howe confirms Newcastle injury latest before Arsenal clash

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed Kieran Trippier will miss Sunday’s game against Arsenal.

Trippier has a calf injury and will join Joelinton, who has a knee problem, in missing Newcastle’s clash with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Howe is more optimistic that Newcastle could have Joe Willock and Sven Botman available.

The match on Sunday is a big one, with Arsenal second in the Premier League - but Newcastle are only two points behind them.

“It was a knock, he got a bang on his knee,” said Howe, when asked about Botman.

“We're not sure about Sven's availability for the weekend but we'll give him a chance to be fit.

“We don't think it's a serious injury. He's been unlucky. You're going to get knocks and bruises in his position and this is a similar thing, he's been really unlucky on the last two occasions.”

On Trippier and Willock, Howe added: “Kieran I don’t think will be fit for this weekend but again it’s not a big injury, a very minor calf problem.

“Joe - we’ll leave the door open for him, I think he’s got a slight chance.”

Joelinton has not played since last month and, while he is pushing to be back, Howe think it is unlikely the midfielder plays again this season.

“He’s working away behind the scenes,” said Howe. “Typical Joe he's absolutely foot to the floor trying to get fit because he wants to be involved.

“The biggest possibility is that we don't see him again this season and we'll get him ready for next year."
