Eddie Howe avoiding 'unhealthy focus' as Newcastle receive Fulham and Liverpool boost

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe insists he isn't looking at the Premier League table or the results of those around the Magpies after getting his side's season back on track. Newcastle got back to winning ways on Sunday with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolves, as European-chasing rivals faltered.

Fulham were stuffed 3-0 by title-chasing Arsenal, Liverpool suffered a shock defeat away to Bournemouth and Brighton dropped points with a 2-2 draw with Leeds. Tottenham were the only team around Newcastle to pick all up three points at the weekend.

However, Howe insists he is not concerned with opposition teams as he focuses solely on trying to keep Newcastle on the right path. "I would very rarely comment on results from other teams on a matchday because I just think it's an unhealthy focus," he said after Sunday's win.

“Even if it's going in your favour, I think sometimes it can add more pressure to your performance, so I try to act as if those games don't exist and the only game that matters is ours because ultimately it's the only thing that we can control, so just to keep the players purely focused on what we need to do to win."

Newcastle's win saw them leapfrog Liverpool to regain fifth-place as the hunt for a Champions League finish continues. Again, Howe is refusing to look at the standings until the end of the season.

"There's no time of year to look at the league table until it's all done, in my opinion, because you can waste so much time looking at results you need and all that nonsense," he added.

“It's about trying to make sure the team plays at the best level that it can as consistently as it can. Today we needed that win to get us back on track, to build confidence levels and we look forward now to next week."
