Eddie Howe has no doubts that Newcastle United’s disallowed goal against Crystal Palace should have stood after a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park.
The incident happened early in the second-half when Sven Botman’s header back across the box from a Kieran Trippier cross was deflected in by Tyrick Mitchell for an own goal.
Vicente Guaita and Joe Willock came together in a nasty collision in the build-up, which led to VAR intervening to check for a possible foul on the Palace goalkeeper.

Referee Michael Salisbury went over to the monitor before disallowing the goal, much to the disgust of Newcastle fans, who felt there was a push from Mitchell on Willock to cause the collision.
Howe also believes there was a push from Mitchell, saying: “I didn’t think it should have been disallowed. I thought it was a push on Joe Willock in the build-up to the ball coming in. Joe’s momentum is fixed at that opponent from his opponent and then carries him into the goalkeeper. But without that push there’s no way Joe would have gone in with that force, so for me it’s not a foul.
“If anything, it’s a penalty if it’s not a goal. I was very surprised by the outcome. I think they [the officials] were swayed by the fact, and this is just my opinion, that the goalkeeper stayed down. I think that ultimately led to the goal being disallowed.”
Newcastle piled the pressure on to snatch a late winner but couldn’t find a way past the Palace shot-stopper. The disallowed goal was the big topic of the game and Palace boss Patrick Vieira believes the officials made the correct call.
“After looking at the images after the game I think that was the right decision from the referee,” said Vieira.
On the claims of a push, Vieira added: “No, not at all. I think if there is not a Newcastle player then our goalkeeper would get the ball and that contact [the collision] of course had a massive impact on the goal. That’s why I believed that was the right decision from the referee.”
