Eddie Howe admits Newcastle cup final distraction and significant progress needed to reach goal

Eddie Howe says Newcastle United have to trust the process if they are to reach more finals at Wembley. The Magpies were well beaten at the famous venue as Manchester United built up what would prove to be an unassailable two goal lead in the first half at Wembley.

Howe and his troops applauded the fans at the final whistle as they continued to make an impressive noise, but it had proved to be a disappointing trip to the capital and they knew it. He said: “It is a process, we want to be here on a regular basis. There is a long way to go to be the team we want to be.”

Newcastle will now set about trying to consolidate their European position in the Premier League table, but this result will sting as they head home to prepare to travel to champions Manchester City next weekend. Still reflecting on the Wembley clash, Howe felt his team stayed in the game despite falling behind but they could not find a way past David De Gea after the break.
