Eddie Howe adds his name to growing list of Kalvin Phillips admirers after Everton masterclass

It's not as if Leeds United fans need reminding.

But Kalvin Phillips showed again on Saturday why he is arguably the most important player within the Leeds United squad.

The Whites' academy graduate put in a stellar performance in the 1-0 away at Everton.

Phillips ran the show in the engine room at Goodison Park on what was a fitting performance in his 150th league start for the club.

The 24-year-old's match stats speak for themselves - most passes, highest passing accuracy and most distance run.

And his latest showing has not gone unntoiced among TV pundits and former managers.

Eddie Howe, the former Bournemouth boss, lavished praise on Phillips' performance.

“He is a hugely influential figure for Leeds," Howe told Premier League TV.

“I think he gives them the stability and the confidence for all their other players to attack.

“You can see their full-backs are really front foot – left-back and right-back overlapping and under-lapping.

“He is always there when they need him to counter any threat on transitions or counter-attacks.

“But also we saw how good he is with the ball and his ability to switch the ball and hit long passes.

“He was excellent.”

Phillips was typically modest about his own showing on Merseyside.

Following the game, he said “Obviously I’m pleased when we win, but it’s all about the team.

"If the team don’t play well, I don’t play well.

"It comes down to individual efforts but it’s collectively as a team. The manager has talked about that every week.

“We haven’t got one really good individual player. We’re a team and we work hard as a team to get results.”

Phillips will be hoping to continue his fine form when the Whites travel to Chelsea on Saturday night.
