Eddie Hearn responds to Anthony Joshua panic attack rumours after Andy Ruiz Jr defeat

Eddie Hearn has been forced to deny rumours Anthony Joshua suffered a panic attack before his shock defeat by Andy Ruiz Jr.

The promoter also rejected suggestions the now former world champion was knocked out in sparring by unbeaten European champion Agit Kabayel.

Joshua was dropped four times by Ruiz before the referee stepped in during the seventh round to consign the Brit to a first professional loss.

The panic attack rumours spread over Twitter on Monday night as an explanation for the delay in Joshua walking to the ring.

Hearn said after the fight that Joshua had to change his groin guard at the last minute, and added on Monday: “I’ve heard all sorts of rumours - there was no issue at all going into the fight.”

Other Twitter users claimed Joshua’s alleged panic attack was behind his dad Robert’s anger at Hearn in the ring after his son’s defeat.

Joshua intervened, telling his father: "No, it's me...I am the one fighting."

Joshua’s face had been marked up in the days leading up to the fight, but he insisted that was due to his recovery sessions, and not an incident in sparring.

He then appeared to suffer a concussion during the fight and asked his corner several confused questions.

At the end of the second round, Joshua asked trainer Rob McCracken, "why do I feel like this?". Joshua also asked his coach at the end of the fifth round, "what's he going to do in this round?", to which McCracken told him Ruiz would try to get on the inside.

Joshua's worrying response was to ask him how he stopped that.

The 2012 Olympic champion was seen by a doctor after the fight but was cleared of a brain injury.
