Eddie Hearn drops another St James' Park mega-fight hint for 2020

Eddie Hearn has again hinted that Lewis Ritson could be matched with unified super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor at St James’ Park in 2020.

Taylor won a fight of the year contender against Regis Prograis at the O2 on Saturday night, earning a points win over the classy American some seven days after Ritson’s memorable win over Robbie Davies Jnr .

Taylor looked like a real class act and would represent both a dream fight for Ritson and also his biggest challenge as he comes off a big win over Davies Jnr.

But Hearn insists the St James’ Park mega-fight that North East fans are dreaming of in 2020 is very much an option for Taylor, who was fighting for his Matchroom promotions for the first time on Saturday.

“We had a fight of the year in Newcastle last week with Lewis Ritson and Robbie Davies and Josh Taylor had another one on Saturday,” Hearn said on the 5Live Boxing Podcast on Saturday.

“This is just the beginning for Josh. He has huge support in Scotland and there’s opportunities for him in Scotland, he could fight Lewis Ritson at St James’ Park, he could fight Jose Ramirez in Las Vegas – he’s got a real chance now.”

Newcastle United officials are understood to be open to the possibility of putting St James’ Park forward for the Ritson fight, with the stadium branching into Rugby League and Rugby Union internationals and European Cup finals in recent years.
