Eddie Hall record in the sights of West Belfast strongman Michael Downey

A West Belfast strongman will attempt to break a British record set by the legendary Eddie Hall next week.

Hall, a former World's Strongest Man winner, set the Dumbbell record of 124.2kg during the Arnold Classic Strongman Show in 2015.

It involves lifting a weight from the ground to shoulder, and then pressed above head with one arm.

Local man Michael Downey is hoping to set a new unofficial record of 125kg next week.

To put that in perspective, 125kg equates to 19.684 stone or 275.578lbs.

"We will record the attempt on video and afterwards we will weigh the dumbbell on accurate competition scales to prove the weight," Michael told Belfast Live Sport.

"I'm hoping to make the record official later this year by doing it at a competition.

"I will try next week's record attempt at Tommy McVeigh's Excel Gym in Derriaghy where I now train with my coach and brother Joe Downey.

"No man in British history has ever pressed the weight with one hand, so hopefully I can do it."

Michael is no stranger to breaking records.

He currently holds the Ireland Log Press record at 192.5kg and Ireland Axle Press record at 181kg - both previously held by Glenn Ross.

Michael has actually lifted heavier during his training sessions.

"My next competition is in June in Dublin where I will increase both Log and Axle Records officially," Michael said.

Next week's record attempt will take place at Excel Gym, Derriaghy Industrial Park, on Monday, April 1 at 2.45pm.

"People can down and support me in this attempt, so feel to come along," Michael added.
