Eddie Garcia dead: Veteran actor and film director dies at 90 after fall left him in coma

Veteran actor and film director Eddie Garcia has died at the age of 90.

The Filipino star's death has been confirmed by family friend Bibeth Orteza and spokesperson Tony Rebosa, reports Inquirer.

Eddie was born Eduardo Verchez García in 1929, but became known professionally was Eddie Garcia or Manoy Eddie.

It's reported that he's died after falling into a coma after an accident on the set of his new TV show.

Earlier this month, on June 9, the actor was rushed to hospital in Tondo, Manila after falling over a wire that was blocking his way and collapsing during a shoot for upcoming show Rosang Agimat.

The next day, he remained unconscious and was transferred to an intensive care unit.

Initial reports said Eddie had suffered a heart attack on the set, but it was later discovered that he had suffered a neck fracture, possibly due to his fall.

It's said his condition worsened on June 19, with him showing "little signs of brain activity". He was dependent on a ventilator.

His cause of death has not yet been announced.

Eddie had a long career in film and television through acting and working as a director and producer.

The star's career spanned seven decades and resulted in more than 600 film and television roles.

He's widely regarded as the greatest Filipino actor of all time.

Eddie's most famous work includes 1971's Beast of the Yellow Night, 1972's The Woman Hurt and 1986's Magdusa ka!

He also starred in 2000's The Debut and Bwakaw in 2012.

Later in his career, Eddie moved into television, with roles in Little Nanay between 2015 and 2016 and Ang Probinsyano since 2016.

He's the only person inducted into three different categories in the FAMAS Hall Of Fame, with him listed under Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Director.

Eddie was always known for maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise, taking vitamins and eating a healthy diet.

He had recently spoken about still having an active sex life at the age of 90 and going to the gym regularly to stay fit.
