Ed Woodward's view on Man Utd's transfer plans casts doubt on big-spending summer

Manchester United have been linked with a number of big-name players ahead of the summer transfer window, including Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Raphael Varane.

However, reports suggest Ed Woodward and John Murtough are unwilling to sanction a squad overhaul this summer.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to sign a centre-back and central defender, as well as a defensive midfielder.

However, vice-chairman Woodward and football director Murtough, who will oversee the club's transfer activity, are wary about a high turnover of players in a single window, reports ESPN.

The pair are, however, said to be in agreement over the need to bring in new players this summer.

United are expected to make Borussia Dortmund star Sancho their top target this summer, with the need for a new striker lessened due to Edinson Cavani's contract extension.

The Uruguayan inked a new one-year deal after an impressive debut season in the Premier League.

And as a result, it's been speculated that they'll look to wait until next year before signing a new striker.

Tottenham star Kane had been on the club's radar, but Manchester City appear to be in the driving seat for his signature.

The Champions League finalists are also in the market for a new centre-forward to replace Sergio Aguero, and Kane has spoken openly of his desire to play alongside Kevin de Bruyne.

Real Madrid star Varane had also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but it's believed that he could stay put at the Bernabeu.

If they are to sign new players, United will likely have to sell players first.

Jesse Lingard is wanted by West Ham after his impressive loan spell at the London Stadium, but it remains to be seen whether Solskjaer will give him another chance in the first-team at Old Trafford.

Lingard has a year to run on his contract, and seems happy at West Ham having guided David Moyes' side to the Europa League.

Diogo Dalot is also expected to depart on a permanent basis, having impressed at AC Milan.

The Italian giants are eager to keep him around as back-up for Theo Hernandez, and are set to enter into talks to sign him permanently.

There was no permanent option in his loan contract, but it's expected that he'll be the subject of a formal bid this summer.
