Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has revealed his wish in regards to the vacant sporting director role at the club, according to the latest transfer gossip.
The Daily Express suggest Woodward wants to appoint internally for the role and has eyed current head of youth development, John Murtough, for the position.
The report states that Murtough has emerged as a front-runner for the role due to his positive working relationship with Woodward and that he is viewed as an ideal candidate by current club hierarchy.
It is suggested in the article that Murtough ticks two boxes for United because he is not only an internal appointment, but also has a proven track record in youth development.
The report also states that, if given the job, one of Murtough's first tasks would be to agree a move for Swansea winger Daniel James.
MEN Sport understand that while there is interest in the Wales international there has been no formal approach from United for the Swansea player yet.
In terms of other transfer gossip, The Times suggest United could sign Gareth Bale for free in the summer window.
A report states Real Madrid are set to undergo a mass clear out at the end of the season with Wales forward Bale one of four players set to leave the club.
Real Madrid reportedly acknowledge the difficulty of selling the 29-year-old and are said to be exploring the option of letting him go for free in order to free up his wages.
