Ed Woodward's 15 transfer windows as Man Utd chief rated and slated

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward brought up his 15th transfer window anniversary this summer, as he delivered yet another antagonising couple of months for fans.

Woodward's hard-nosed approach has seen the former accountant make some bargain buys, but also miss out on landing top talent.

The Old Trafford bigwig has been overseeing things behind the scenes roughly since Sir Alex Ferugons's departure in 2013.

United managed to bring in four new players on transfer deadline day, including Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani, adding to the purchase of Donny van de Beek in August.

But the failure to capture Jadon Sancho after months of negotiations spoke volumes about how Woodward goes about his business in the transfer market.

So how does the recent window compare to the other 14 he has overseen?

Scores are out of 10...

2013 summer - 2

David Moyes instructed Woodward to target Cesc Fàbregas, Thiago Alcantara, Ander Herrera and Leighton Baines, but he ended up with Maroune Fellaini instead.

This one really set the tone.

Ins: Marouane Fellaini (£27.5m)

2014 winter - 4

Things stepped up a notch in January as Woodward coughed up a steep sum for Mata from Chelsea.

He’s still there now, of course, which is quite reassuring.

Ins: Juan Mata (£37.1m)

2014 summer - 5

A very mixed bag this time out, with Woodward compensating for the previous season with some overly extravagant deals.

Di Maria and Falcao are arguably two of the biggest flops in United’s history, but they’re saved by the long-term service of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera.

New boss Louis van Gaal got rid of some long-term Sir Alex Ferguson servants for pennies too.

Ins: Ander Herrera (£29m), Luke Shaw (£27m), Ángel Di María (£60m), Marcos Rojo (£16m), Daley Blind (£13.8m), Radamel Falcao (£16m loan fee).

Outs: Danny Welbeck (£18m), Shinji Kagawa (£7.2m), Wilfried Zaha (£3.4m), Patrice Evra (£1.7m) and various others.

NO BUSINESS OF NOTE

2015 summer - 4

Another mixed bag, in fairness, with an up and coming Anthony Martial joining from Monaco and major flop Memphis Depay switching from PSV, among other deals.

United managed to recoup most of the Di Maria fee, while making some pretty cheap sales.

Ins: Anthony Martial (£54m), Morgan Schneiderlin (£31m), Memphis Depay (£30m), Matteo Darmian (£16m), Bastian Schweinsteiger (£8m), Sergio Romero (free).

Outs: Ángel Di María (£56m), Javier Hernández (£10m), Jonny Evans (£7.5m), Robin van Persie (£5.5m), Nani (£5.5m), Rafael (£3m).

2016 summer - 7

Woodward pulled no punches in this window, landing some top, top talent and giving the fans what they want.

Ins: Paul Pogba (£94m), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£38m), Eric Bailly (£34m), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (free)

Outs: Paddy McNair (£5m)

2017 winter - 2

A selling window this time at Old Trafford, and the loss of several millions.

Outs: Morgan Schneiderlin (£20m), Memphis Depay (£14m), Bastian Schweinsteiger (free)

Romelu Lukaku (Man Utd, £75m) - 22% (GETTY)

2017 summer - 6

Following on from a Europa League triumph, United looked to rebuild with some solid transfers.

Meanwhile, the club’s top scorer finally called time on his Old Trafford career.

Ins: Romelu Lukaku (£76m), Nemanja Matic (£40m), Victor Lindelof (£31m)

Outs: Adnan Januzaj (£7.5m), Wayne Rooney (free)

2018 winter - 3

United looked to get themselves a bargain when they swapped Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Alexis Sánchez.

They probably regret it now though.

Ins: Alexis Sánchez (swap deal)

Outs: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (swap deal), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (free)

2018 summer

Jose Mourinho was left scratching his head in this window was Woodward refused to listen to his demands, only to see him given the boot a few months later.

Fred looked like an overpriced flop, but has turned things around in recent months.

Ins: Fred (£53m), Diogo Dalot (£20m), Lee Grant (£1.5m)

Outs: Daley Blind (£14m), Sam Johnstone (£6.5m)

2019 winter - 4

With Mourinho gone, so was Fellaini, heading to China for a smidge of his initial cost.

2019 summer - 5

Young British talent was the name of the game for Solskjaer as they broke the world record fee for a defender; bringing in some decent moular as well.

Losing Herrera on a free was bad business though.

Ins: Harry Maguire (£78m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m), Daniel James (£16m)

Outs: Romelu Lukaku (£66m), Matteo Darmian (£2m), Ander Herrera (free), Antonio Valencia (loan), Alexis Sánchez (loan)

Bruno Fernandes (PETER POWELL/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

2020 winter - 9

Bruno Fernandes - United’s saviour finally arrived to salvage a place in the Champions League. Woodward’s best ever signing.

Ins: Bruno Fernandes (£49m), Odion Ighalo (loan)

Outs: Ashley Young (£1.6m), Marcos Rojo (loan)

2020 summer - 6

Another summer that promised so much, but delivered so little. If Jadon Sancho had arrived, it would have been a resounding success.

Ins: Donny van de Beek (£35m), Alex Telles (£13m), Facundo Pellistri (£7.5m), Edinson Cavani (free)

Outs: Chris Smalling (£13.5m), Alexis Sánchez (free), various loan deals.
