Ed Woodward defines Man Utd's upcoming transfer window with two words in message to fans

Ed Woodward has said that Manchester United will approach the summer transfer window with "extra caution".

Football clubs around the world are feeling the financial affects of the coronavirus which is likely to have a huge knock on affect on spending in the coming months.

United's stature around the globe and commercial might has allowed them to handle the pandemic better than most.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he is keen to strengthen the squad where they can, but as the Red Devils look to close the gap on the top two their targets are becoming more expensive.

The likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish have both been touted as potential arrivals but will each cost hefty fees.

And while Woodward has highlighted the financial strength of the club he has urged fans not to expect huge sums to be shelled out.

He wrote in his programme notes: "The ongoing disruption from the pandemic – and the economic pressures it has created – has shown why it is so important for football clubs to focus on their financial stability," he added.

"We are fortunate to have a strong and resilient commercial business which has supported long-term investment in our team. That will continue, albeit with extra caution in the coming months as we navigate our way through this uncertain period."

United have spent around £200m on four players over the past two transfer windows - including Harry Maguire's world record deal for a defender.

Solskjaer is thought to be keen on adding another central defender while also bolstering other areas.

The Norwegian has looked to employee some direction when it comes to recruitment rather than following the big name strategy that had come before his arrival.

Homegrown players have largely been targeted, which lends itself to their interest in Sancho and Grealish.

One man who won't be heading to Old Trafford however is Jude Bellingham who opted for a switch to Borussia Dortmund.
