Ed Sheeran pulls pints and sings with punters at Birmingham pub in surprise visit

Ed Sheeran played pool and led a sing-along to Serani hit No Games with delighted punters when he paid a surprise visit to a pub in Birmingham.

The popstar, fresh from winning his copyright legal battle at the High Court, enjoyed a few pints at The Roost pub, and even had a go at pulling a few himself, although landlord Ian Connor says Ed is lacking in that particular skill, Birmingham Live reports.

The 31-year-old megastar arrived at the boozer with his friend and rapper Jaykae, who is from the area, last night, to enjoy some pints of Carling and relax.

Ian, who has run The Roost, in Small Health, with Theresa Kempson for four months, told Birmingham Live that he didn't recognise the hit-maker when he entered the establishment at around 9:30pm.

Jaykae had called, the publican said, to say he was on his way, but he didn't disclose who with.

The rapper regularly visits The Roost, and before that the Bordesley Labour Club, which Ian and Theresa ran until it closed down.

Ian said: "He didn't tell us who it was, just that he wanted us to keep it low key. Jay comes in the pub anyway, on match days and mid-week, and we get on. Next thing you know, he's walking in with two of his lads, and Ed Sheeran walks in behind him.

Despite his phenomenal success, Ed didn't behave with the ego that might be expected from someone with such fame.

"He was absolutely sound, great to everyone, having a laugh and a joke and a game of pool with the lads," Ian said, adding: "He was absolutely brilliant. As good as gold, really down to earth."

The pub was hosting a pool tournament that night, and the pub was fairly busy, with about 25 people.

Ed picked up a cue and had a go at pool, with the popstar staying until closing time.

Ian said: "He never complained once, he didn't whinge about having a photo with anyone and he even had a go at pulling a few pints.

"He can't pull a pint though, I can tell you that!"

That weekend Ed was also spotted at a curry house in Birmingham, which is also a favourite of Hollywood Star Tom Cruise.

On Thursday, the Photograph singer won his High Court battle, when a judge ruled he did not steal part of his single Shape of You from another song.

Ed and the song's co-writers, Snow Patrol’s John McDaid and producer Steven McCutcheon, denied ripping off the song by Oh Why Sami Chokri.

Chokri, a grime artist who performs under the name Sami Switch, and his co-writer Ross O’Donoghue, claimed an “Oh I” hook in Shape Of You is “strikingly similar” to an “Oh Why” refrain in their track.

But In a verdict given remotely, Mr Justice Zacaroli said Sheeran "neither deliberately or subconsciously copied the phrase."
