Ed Sheeran nearly bought a private island and moved to Ghana

Ed Sheeran had dreams of getting away from it all and moving to a private island. Failing that, he has thought about emigrating to Ghana.

The Shape Of You hitmaker, who is married to childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn, was talking to Harry Potter stars James and Oliver Phelps on their podcast Normal Not Normal about some of the outrageous ideas he has come up with.

Ed asked his manager Stuart Camp: “What is the most ridiculous thing you've talked me down from recently?”

Stuart laughed and replied: “There’s too many!”

He continued, as if he were Ed himself speaking: “'I’m gonna buy an island here. I’ve had enough, me and Cherry are emigrating to Ghana for three years.'”

Ed agreed that sometimes he could be a little impetuous, adding: “‘I sent Stuart this uninhabited island in Ireland that you’re not even allowed to build a house on and I was like, 'I think this is a good idea! I think I’m going to buy this and move here!'"

Stuart confirmed this was the sort of conversation he has to rein in, saying: “You’ll get the odd thing like that and I go, ‘Yes dear.’ You sort of let the idea percolate and it’ll kill itself eventually.”

The 30-year-old singer from Suffolk started off his career as a busker on the streets of London. He rose to fame performing hit songs like Thinking Out Loud, as well as writing for others including Perfect for Beyonce and Justin Bieber ’s Love Yourself.

Now he plays sell-out tours around the world and is said to be worth more than £160million, so he could certainly afford to own a private island.

Ed lives with his wife Cherry and their baby daughter Lyra in Framlingham, the town where he grew up.

He owns several houses on a £3.7 million estate that has been nicknamed Sheeranville. Ed confessed to Fleur East on her breakfast show that he wanted to change the name to something else.

“I actually tried to change the name. But it got denied,” he admitted.

Football-mad Ed was seen on Tuesday night in the VIP box at Wembley Stadium with Cherry. The couple were supporting England in the Euros 2020 football tournament as they beat Germany 2-0.

They sat with David Beckham and close to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son. But the Sheerans were flouting the formal dress code by wearing jeans, unlike little Prince George, who wore a smart suit and tie that matched his father Prince William.
