Ed Sheeran has only just got a licence for two huge Roundhay Park gigs this summer

Ed Sheeran has already sold thousands of tickets for his two massive shows at Roundhay Park this summer - but the 28-year-old has only just been granted a licence for tens of thousands of people to attend the outdoor events.

The current laws mean only 19,999 people are allowed into Roundhay Park at any one time for an event, which would have severely restricted the number of people who could have gone to Sheeran's gigs in Leeds on August 16 and 17.

However, the city's decision-makers decided this morning to up that number to 79,999, quadrupling the capacity and making it one of the UK's largest live music venues. It means Roundhay Park can now house more people for large-scale events than Old Trafford and Twickenham.

The decision comes less than three months before the gigs and after thousands of people have already bought tickets.

At today's licensing committee meeting, one local resident said: "Who thought it would be okay to start selling tickets and leave it until a couple of months before the event to get permission? How is that democracy?"

In reality though, Sheeran's two Leeds gigs were never under serious threat and the decision was little more than a box-ticking exercise.

Similar council meetings take place every single year to grant permission for Leeds Festival to go ahead at Bramham Park.

Leeds is one of just two locations that Sheeran has decided to play this summer, with the global star also turning out in his hometown of Ipswich on four consecutive nights after visiting Yorkshire.

How to get tickets

Tickets are still available for Sheeran's Friday night 'homecoming' gig in Roundhay Park.

They cost 82.50 each and are available from Ticketmaster.
