Ed Sheeran baffles hero Damien Rice as crew drink vodka from sculpture of A-Team singer

Ed Sheeran’s attempt to break the ice with his hero resulted in him getting the cold shoulder, a pal says.

The Shape of You singer threw a party to celebrate the end of his tour last year – and it included a life-size ice sculpture of himself.

The statue contained vodka for his guests and Ed, 29, was thrilled when singer/songwriter Damien Rice, 46, pitched up.

Singer James Bay revealed: “I toured with Ed last year and it ended in Iceland. On the second to last night, he had a party for the crew and everyone.

“Damien comes in and Ed said, ‘I haven’t really talked to Damien Rice ever. He’s the reason I picked up a guitar, he’s my superhero’.”

James heard Ed telling Damien how he was inspired by his “humble, organic quality”.

But the first thing Damien saw was the statue of Ed and the crew downing vodka from its head.

James, who was talking on the Table Manners podcast, said: “There was great irony.

"Even when Ed told me about it, I got the impression Damien didn’t have a clue and looked at this ice sculpture, like, ‘What the f***?’ We all love that.”

It’s not the first time Ed, worth an estimated £125million, has been brought to life in art.

In 2016, he backed a charity project to make a string of pig-shaped statues in the style of him which were later auctioned off.

And last year, a 16ft statue of the star appeared when he played in Moscow, a stunt called “unusual”.
