Ed's Shearing's Dog Grooming Studio reveals the touching story behind business

Ed's Shearing's Dog Grooming Studio is more than a humorous nod to award-winning singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran.

It's a reminder of how owners Julie and Alfie Moon came to quit their job as firefighters and follow their dream.

The couple opened their dog grooming studio in February 2020, exactly one month before the UK was plunged into the first coronavirus lockdown.

And now they have revealed the real inspiration behind the business is Julie's mum Edna, who died in 2018 after taking ill with a hernia.

Julie, 53, said: "when my mam died I didn't know how I was going to make things better so we got a dog and named him Eddy after my mam because we used to call her Ed for short.

"We knew Eddy was going to need to be groomed and I used to be a hairdresser so I decided to train as a dog groomer and that's how it all came about."

After her mum's death, Julie decided something needed to change in her life.

She bought a cavapoo and named him Eddy and later decided to pursue her idea to open a dog grooming studio, with Ed's Shearing's deemed the perfect name.

Julie added: "My mam Edna had bright ginger hair, Eddy the dog has ginger hair and so does Ed Sheeran so it seemed like the perfect name."

Julie retrained as a dog groomer and found the perfect premises with her husband, in Low Fell, Gateshead.

And despite the challenges of the pandemic, the couple are celebrating a successful first year as business owners.

A highlight for the couple has been the recognition from Ed Sheeran, whose signed photo stands pride of place at the entrance to the studio, along with a picture of Edna.

Julie said: "We wrote to Ed Sheeran's management company and they sent us a signed photo and a letter to congratulate us and wish us the best of luck with the business.

"They said Ed thinks it's great and wishes us all the best with it."

The couple hope that they may be able to open a second dog grooming studio in the future - and they would love Ed Sheeran to do the grand opening.
