With many media members expecting Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco to be traded this offseason, there has been a lot of speculation that he could land with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His former teammate, Hall of Famer Ed Reed, believes Jacksonville would be a good spot for Flacco, telling TMZ that the Jags would give the veteran quarterback a legitimate shot at returning to the Super Bowl.
“Flacco might be in Jacksonville, man,” Reed said. “That’s if he [wants] to win another Super Bowl.”
The biggest issue with trading for Flacco is the price tag he’d come with, followed by the need to give up a draft pick or two. Per Over the Cap, he carries a $26.5 million cap hit. Add that to the potential dead-cap hit of Blake Bortles ($16.5 million if released before June 1 or $11.5 million if released after) and the Jags could be spending up to $43 million on the quarterback position. Even with a post-June 1 release, most would agree that Flacco is not worth that price tag.
If the Jags intended to pay a veteran quarterback a ridiculous amount of money, Nick Foles may be more viable than Flacco, and even that would be a questionable call. But one thing becomes clearer with each passing day: Between steep hits to the wallet and having to give up draft picks, the Jags have a difficult decision to make when it comes to finding their next starter.
