Ed Balls wins Celebrity Best Home Cook beating Tom Read Wilson in the final

Ed Balls was crowned the winner of Celebrity Best Home Cook on Wednesday night.

The former politician, who served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2011 to 2015, beat Celebs Go Dating star Tom Read Wilson in the final of the BBC cooking show.

Ed, 53, managed to impress judges Mary Berry, Chris Bavin and Angela Hartnett with his final dishes, which included a butternut squash curry.

For the final challenge, Ed rustled up a delicious-looking crab tart, herby lamb cutlets and also a banana bread complete with a cream cheese frosting.

The father-of-three said he was inspired to take part in Celebrity Best Home Cook by his mother Carolyn, who he hasn't seen for months.

Ed said he hoped his mum, who is battling dementia in a care home, would be able to recognise him on screen and see him cooking the meals she showed him how to make.

Ed looked visibly stunned as Mary announced he had won and even looked a bit emotional.

"Thank you, it's a great honour to win and I think it’s for my kids who I practiced on for years and years," he said.

"But it’s also for my mum and for mums and dads who want to learn to cook and be better. I'm feeling great."

Ed, who is married to former shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, still a Labour MP, said of the show: “I started to care much more than I expected.

"I suddenly realised that if Mary Berry or Angela didn’t like my lasagne, then actually they didn’t like my mum’s lasagne.

Runner up Tom Read Wilson described Ed Balls as 'a culinary wizard' (BBC/Keo Films)

"If they criticised my shepherd’s pie that would have been 50 years of my life being challenged. The earliest thing I can ever remember eating is my grandma’s shepherds pie."

Celebs Go Dating star Tom was absolutely chuffed for Ed too, and added: "Truthfully this is the best possible outcome, he is a culinary wizard!"

Mary also said: "Ed is a worthy winner, he put his heart and soul into the final."

The likes of Ferne McCann, Shobna Gulati, Ed Byrne, and journalist Rachel Johnson all took part in the series and returned for the final result to see Ed win the golden spoon.
