Ed Bailey's heartbreaking secret threatens to tear his family apart on Coronation Street

The Bailey family have been settling onto the Coronation Street cobbles after moving in a couple of months ago, and it's set to be revealed that they're hiding a heartbreaking secret.

Ed Bailey, a no-nonsense builder, is battling a devastating gambling addiction threatening his marriage to wife Aggie.

The family's reason for making a new start and moving into Emily Bishop and Norris Cole's old house hasn't been revealed on Corrie, until now.

When Aggie's card is refused in the corner shop she thinks he's up to his old tricks again.

When she tackles her husband he assures her it's nothing more than cash flow problems, but Ed admits to their eldest son Michael that he's in a financial hole.

Ed agrees to let their youngest boy James lend him £5,000 but once the first £1,000 is transferred Michael finds his dad sitting staring at a gambling site.

Breaking down, he says it's time to confess all to Aggie that he was to blame for them losing everything and not Michael who has tried to shoulder the blame because of his get rich quick schemes.

"Edison has got a gambling problem and he has gambled before and he's promised he'll never gamble again," explains actress Lorna Laidlaw who plays Aggie.

"That's why Michael takes the responsibility of taking it on his shoulders that he lost them the house and not Ed.

"It's a lovely thing for a son to do really, to take that massive thing because he does not want his mum and dad to split up.

"It's so sweet but Edison loses us the house and it all gets revealed really slowly, the card being declined, it all starts to escalate. When it's revealed it's absolutely heartbreaking."

Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell) (Joseph Scanlon/ITV/Coronation Street)

Lorna says a heartbroken Aggie walks out because of Edison's behaviour and the family is left panicking that she might not return, until her new friend Roy Cropper steps in and helps to save their marriage.

Asked what Aggie's reaction will be she says: "She's heartbroken, she's absolutely heartbroken. When I first read  it I thought 'kick him out, why the hell are you going back?'

"Then you read it and what we've tried to do is absolutely set up how in love they are and how much they love their kids."

Lorna is hoping the storyline will see the whole family receive help and support for Edison's addiction.

James Bailey (Nathan Graham) (Joseph Scanlon/ITV/Coronation Street)

"It's a very traumatic thing, the thing you thought was your existence being taken away because of someone's actions," she said.
