Ecuador has initiated electricity rationing in its main cities as a result of a drought associated with the El Niño weather pattern. The country heavily relies on hydroelectric plants for about 75% of its power generation, but the drought has led to depleted reservoirs and reduced output.

The Ministry of Energy announced the power cuts, urging citizens to reduce their electricity consumption during this critical period. The government emphasized the importance of conserving energy and water resources to address the current situation.

Similar challenges have been faced in neighboring Colombia, where Bogotá recently had to ration water due to record-low reservoir levels. The dry weather conditions have also impacted communities like La Calera, where water scarcity has become a pressing issue.

The diminished precipitation in Ecuador and Colombia this year is attributed to warming temperatures in the south Pacific Ocean, causing droughts in the Andean valleys where major cities are situated. Both countries are exploring measures to mitigate the energy crisis, including tax incentives for companies that reduce electricity consumption.

Experts highlight the need for diversified energy sources to enhance resilience against such climate-related challenges. While the current drought is not as severe as past El Niño events, the growing demand for electricity underscores the importance of transitioning to a more varied energy mix.

In Ecuador, scheduled power cuts have affected cities like Quito, Cuenca, and Guayaquil, impacting households and businesses. Some entrepreneurs have found opportunities amid the crisis, while others face operational difficulties due to the outages.

President Daniel Noboa raised concerns about alleged sabotage of power plants by political opponents, without providing evidence. The government plans to investigate these claims while taking steps to address the energy situation, including subsidizing electricity bills for the public.

The ongoing challenges highlight the need for sustainable energy practices and proactive measures to ensure reliable power supply in the face of environmental uncertainties.
