Economy provokes arguments

There are mixed signals in the papers this morning, as The Guardian reports on disagreements between Gordon Brown and Bank of England governor Mervyn King about the so-called golden rules, but inflation seems to be on target.

The Times carries the same news on inflation and like The Guardian it uses the report to dampen hopes of a further interest rate cut, although one columnist in The Independent clearly thinks it's mostly good news.

Other snippets: The Times has a small business section and yesterday ran a column on lousy customer service. The Daily Telegraph notes that the WEEE directive - that's the one that makes retailers and manufacturers responsible for disposing of goods once they're no longer required by the customer - is being delayed for the second time in the UK. Power prices are on the way up, says the same paper, which also notes some controversy over the number of tribunal claims in the UK.

The Daily Mail has more on oil prices increasing, In industry-specific news, the same newspaper reports that Blockbuster Video is cutting its forecasts - and blaming it on the lack of hits coming out of Hollywood at the moment. So all of you video rental bods who thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins and others were doing well and that it was the online rental market that was doing you damage, shame on you...
