Let no one say that Britain isn't making progress in addressing its fossil fuel dependency. Gordon Brown has said four times now that we must change our energy ways, and figures revealed today in a reply to a parliamentary question tabled by the Conservatives prove that indeed we are doing so.
The trouble is that we are going in the wrong direction.
In 1997, we were 88.1% dependent on fossil fuels. Figures from 2007 show we are now at 91.3%. That 3.2% increase equates to burning an extra 7.5m tonnes of oil a year. At this rate, we will be almost totally dependent by 2020.
