Eco Soundings: Ban amber traffic lights to cut pollution, says Brussels

Traffic lights on red

Don't tell the motoring lobby, but Eco Soundings hears that Brussels wants to outlaw the amber signal on UK traffic lights, as part of efforts to curb pollution. Revving to race the lights is reckoned to produce an extra 1.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide each day at Stoke-on-Trent junctions alone – enough to fill an inflatable pig. The replacement of all 1.4m traffic signals in Britain will take place during a traffic-free 24 hours one year from today.

Eco Soundings is our regular bite-sized blog series. It appears every Wednesday in the Guardian newspaper
