Eclair Fifi on Cher, hangover cures and stealing tomatoes

Clair Stirling — aka Eclair Fifi — is the first lady of electronic and hip-hop label LuckyMe. The Scottish DJ started on pirate radio at 16 and hosts a show on London station NTS. She’s recorded mixes for FACT, Triple J and URB, was Azealia Banks’s go-to DJ for her Mermaid’s Ball parties and is at Field Day next month. She launches her own label, River Rapid, this summer. Here’s how she got lucky.

Who is your hero?

Cher.

What would you save if your house fell into a sinkhole?

My cat, Squid. Everything else is replaceable, even my records. I have a list of all the records I have on Discogs so they can go and sink.

The spookiest thing that’s happened to you?

When I was about 16, I dreamed that one of my mum’s vases smashed. I didn’t tell her and it broke days later, with no explanation.

Your favourite smell?

The inside of a fresh, new book.

Your earliest memory?

Naked and stealing tomatoes out of the garden in the night to snack on. I have vague memories of my mum running out to put me back to bed. I think I was about three and I’ve loved tomatoes ever since. I even considered getting a tomato tattoo.

What was your worst job?

I’ve been a chef and a decorator. I’ve even laid bricks. The worst was processing expenses for bankers.

Best hangover cure?

Solpadeine Max, a sparkling water, then still water and a double espresso. Then salty food. Sorted.

Your proudest moment?

Scraping an honours degree when DJing every weekend.

Wildest thing on stage?

A couple started having sex on the DJ booth while I was DJing in Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh. I thought it was funny but it got stopped. That’s probably not too wild for other clubs in Europe.

Eclair Fifi performs at Field Day on June 8
