Echo readers want "scum bag" James Gelling locked up for life after he killed an innocent LFC fan

Echo readers have slammed the "scum bag" who killed a Liverpool FC fan on his way home from watching the Reds' Champions League Final win.

James Gelling attacked Ventsislav Marginov while he was on his way home with his two sons, after watching a screening of the game at Victoria Park in Southport.

The 51-year-old was punched once by Gelling on Lord Street near to the Scarisbrick Hotel at around 10.40pm on June 1.

Mr Marginov was taken to Aintree Hospital where he died three days later.

Gelling, 31, of Hampton Road, Southport was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm, but this was  changed to manslaughter after Mr Marginov's death.

He is now in jail awaiting sentence on September 9.

Outraged by the incident, Echo readers took to social media to air their views.

What they had to say

One ECHO reader, Simon Anderson, said: "He’d just gone to watch the game with his lads. This woman beater has had chance after chance since it was a kid. Nothing's worked. It’s never going to change. You have to jail it for life.

Another reader, Cathy Stack Henney, said: "Absolutely disgusting behaviour from being a child. It is obvious that he is a danger to society. Lock him up and throw away the key... Deepest sympathy to all the deceased's family and friends. RIP."

The need for harsher sentencing was a view shared by many ECHO readers who were left feeling fustrated.

Michael Jackson, added: "Should throw away the key. Don't think he will be around for a while."

While Daniel Danaa, said: "Absolute scumbags! Lock them up and throw away the key!!"

And Monty Sinclair added: "There should be another charge above manslaughter for offences like this. Something like America where this would be second degree murder. As this is not causing death accidentally. He meant to harm the man and caused his death by doing so! Law need changing!"

The sentencing guidelines for "unlawful act manslaughter" are between one and 24 years depending on culpability and aggravating factors. Gelling is likely to receive a one third discount for his guilty plea. A life sentence if possible.

Gelling has countless other convictions including for battering the mum of his child and  threatening to go "Raoul Moat" on her  if she told police.

He then hit the headlines again after in 2014 for scaling a 12ft dock to escape custody, which earned him the nickname the  'Southport Spider-Man' .

Gelling punched his way through ceiling tiles at Sefton Magistrates' Court, kicked a security guard in the chest then fled, sparking a four-week manhunt.

The then 27-year-old was finally arrested at a property in Bolton, when he told police he knew they were coming and "should have booked a hotel".
