ECHO in the chair as Labour leadership hopefuls go head to head for the first time in Liverpool

The five candidates aiming to be the next leader of the Labour Party will go head to head for the first time in Liverpool this weekend.

And the Liverpool ECHO will be chairing the key event - which could have a major impact on the high profile leadership currently taking place.

Political Editor Liam Thorp will be in the moderator role as Rebecca Long-Bailey, Sir Keir Starmer, Lisa Nandy, Jess Phillips and Emily Thornberry are quizzed by Labour members in the event, that is being held at the Arena and Convention Centre at Kings Dock.

The event is for Labour members only, but will be streamed live online by the party to a potentially very large audience.

The leadership hustings event will take place between 11.30am and 2pm - followed by an hour break for lunch.

After the break, Liam will return to the stage to chair a second hustings event for the candidates aiming to become the new Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Between 2pm and 3.30pm, MPs Angela Rayner, Richard Burgon, Rosena Allin-Khan, Dawn Butler and Ian Murray will go head to head as they bid to replace Tom Watson as the second most senior figure in the national party.

This will be the first of many hustings event around the country - and comes after a disastrous General Election result for Labour which saw Jeremy Corbyn announce he will be stepping down as leader.

While Labour lost many of its heartland seats in the North of England - Liverpool bucked the trend and returned five red rose MPs with large majorities.

This, the thriving membership in the city and the good transport links to surrounding areas have all played a role in Liverpool being chosen as host city for this first crucial hustings event.

Speaking about the event, Liverpool Echo Editor-in-Chief Alastair Machray said: "Liverpool once again showed its faith in the Labour Party at the General Election.

"This is a city that is passionate about social justice and one that has suffered badly over many years of Conservative government cuts.

"It is highly appropriate that the first hustings event of this exciting leadership contest will be held in Liverpool, and we are delighted that the ECHO will be playing a central role with our political editor Liam in the moderator chair.

"We are all looking forward to an interesting and energetic debate that we hope will address some of the key concerns of Labour members in this city and beyond."
