Eccles Metrolink line suspended in second bout of disruption for tram passengers

The Eccles Metrolink line was been suspended this evening in a second bout of disruption for tram passengers.

All services on the Eccles and MediaCity line were halted due to a fault with an overhead power line meaning no services are running between Eccles and Manchester city centre.

Tickets were accepted on the number 33, 50, 53 and 70 bus services.

As a knock-on effect there were also severe delays on the Ashton line with tickets being accepted on the 216 and 217 bus services between Ashton-under-Lyne and the city centre.

Services resumed around 9:45pm however Metrolink warned there could be residual delays for the rest of the evening.

It is the second time today services had to be halted after a fire which this morning shutdown the entire network.

All services ground to a halt shortly after 10:15am after a fire in an underground Metrolink chamber on Balloon Street near Victoria Station caused a loss of power.

Two engineers were injured.

There was a large emergency services presence in the city centre with Corporation Street and Balloon Street shut for around two hours until services resumed around 12.30pm.

The Altrincham, East Didsbury, Airport and Rochdale and Oldham lines were all still reporting minor delays following the incident this evening.
