If you ask fans of Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach about the two actors who love working together, we all have our favorite performances. Whether it is The Bear or The Punisher, we love seeing the two work together. And now we can see them on stage!
It was announced that Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach will be bringing an adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon to life from The Motherf***er With the Hat playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis. Rupert Goold, who is responsible for productions of American Psycho and Spring Awakening on the West End is set to direct the two in their Broadway debuts!
As of right now, there is no news on how the adaptation will differ from Sidney Lumet’s 1975 film. The movie, which reunited Al Pacino and his Godfather co-star John Cazale, is a classic for a reason. But it does seem like some things will change. According to Variety, Bernthal is playing a character named Sonny Amato, different from Pacino’s Sonny Wortzik. Moss-Bachrach is playing Sal DeSilva, who is probably the new version of Cazale’s Sal Naturile.
As someone who loves seeing Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach work together, seeing them both have their Broadway debuts together is really touching. The two reportedly met years ago when Bernthal was understudying Moss-Bachrach in an off-Broadway show so it is very sweet that the two are working together for their respective Broadway debuts!
We know that the show is set to debut in the spring of 2026 and other than that, we don’t know what their take on Dog Day Afternoon will bring to audiences. There is still casting that needs to be done and we’ll have to wait and see how the film translates on stage but for now, we know that Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach will be reunited again and that is pretty amazing!
