- The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared a "public health emergency of international concern" over the latest Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
- This outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus disease, a rarer strain of Ebola for which there is currently no specific vaccine or treatments, and it carries an estimated fatality rate of between 30 and 40 per cent.
- Symptoms of Ebola include fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and unexplained bleeding or bruising (a late stage of illness).
- The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared there is a low risk to the UK population from the current Ebola outbreak.
- The UKHSA said: “Although the outbreak is serious, it is rare for Ebola cases to occur in returning travellers. In the UK, the NHS has safe procedures in place for any such cases and specialist centres where they can be looked after.”
