Ebbw Fawr Learning Community in Ebbw Vale confirms coronavirus case

A second school in Blaenau Gwent has confirmed a positive case of Covid-19.

Ebbw Fawr Learning Community in Ebbw Vale announced in a letter to parents on Thursday that there has been a case in its secondary phase, which covers pupils aged 11 to 16.

Blaenau Gwent council confirmed that 30 pupils in Year Eight and one member of staff have been told to self-isolate after a pupil tested positive for the virus.

It is the second school in the borough to confirm a case of coronavirus after Year 10 students at Tredegar Comprehensive were sent home on September 8 to self-isolate after a pupil tested positve.

In a letter to parentsEbbw Fawr Learning Community head teacher Huw Lloyd said: "We have been notified of a positive case of Covid-19 of a pupil within the secondary phase.

"The relevant pupils and associated staff have been contacted and have been asked to self-isolate in accordance with government guidelines."

He also stressed that the school remains open to all year groups but urged parents not to send their children to school and arrange for a coronavirus test if they developed any of the following symptoms:

  • High temperature
  • Persistent cough
  • Loss of taste and/or smell

As of September 17 more than 1,000 pupils and staff across Wales have been told to self-isolate after coming into close contact with a positive coronavirus case.

So far 19 of Wales' 22 councils have confirmed coronavirus cases in their schools.
