Ebbe Skovdahl dead aged 75 as former Aberdeen boss loses battle against cancer

Former Aberdeen boss Ebbe Skovdahl has passed away at the age of 75 after a long-term battle with cancer.

The Dane spent four years in charge of the Pittodrie club from 1999 to 2003 before returning to his homeland with BK Frem.

He's best known on the world stage for his time at Brondby where he guided the club to four league titles over three spells in charge. He also spent six years there as a player.

An Aberdeen statement said: "Everyone at Pittodrie is saddened to hear of the passing of our former manager, Ebbe Skovdahl at the age of 75. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

During his time in the North East, he once famously said: "Statistics are like mini-skirts - they give you good ideas but hide the important things."

Skovdahl has battled the illness in recent years and his son Rene said: "Our father was incredibly proud and grateful to have been part of the Brøndby family. The time in Brøndby is the one he has always remembered and thought back on.

"He was very humble about his own role in the club, so when Ebbe Skovdahl Fan Lounge at Brøndby Stadion was named after him three years ago, he was very honored.

"Our father had cancer for the last many years of his life, and as a family we have no doubt that the recognition he received with Ebbe Skovdahl Fan Loungen helped to give him some extra years, because it meant a lot to him to get to the fights in the lounge and experience that he still had an active role in the club.

"Over the years, we have seen and experienced up close how much our father has meant to so many people, and it is something that warms up in a difficult time, and that we want to have with us in the future."

During his time in Scotland, Skovdahl guided Aberdeen to both the League Cup and Scottish Cup Final in 2000.

As well as managing various clubs in Denmark, Skovdahl also had a short spell in charge of Portuguese giants Benfica. He was the uncle of Rangers legend Brian Laudrup.
