eBay sellers are listing hand sanitiser gel for thousands of pounds

eBay sellers have been slammed online for selling bottles of hand sanitiser for extortionate prices.

According to the Manchester Evening News , bottles of hand sanitiser from popular brands such as Carex, Cuticura and Purell are currently being listed for hundreds of pounds- some are even selling for thousands.

A four pack of Cuticura Original 250ml - that are listed on the Boots website for £2 each - are being listed for £99.99 on eBay.

Twelve 50ml bottles of Carex hand gel - usually priced at £1 each on the high street - are being listed for £899.

Six 60ml bottles of travel-size Purell hand sanitiser gel are currently selling for a whopping £1,168.99.

There is even a bottle of Aloe Vera Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser Gel, which has received 32 bids and is currently priced at £5,000 plus £3.48 delivery.

This hand gel is even being sold as a 'used' product with the description reading: "There's 100ml when full & it's about half full".

These price spikes follow on from the reported shortages of hand sanitiser on the high street.

Boots and Lloyds even had to restrict sales of hand sanitiser to two per customers after the shelves were stripped of the gels.

Twitter users have noticed the shocking increase in hand sanitiser prices on eBay.

One person tweeted: "Mildly interesting: put 'hand sanitiser' into eBay and look at the completed listings.

"750pc mark up on some of this, jeez."

Another Twitter user said: "How has my brother bought a box of hand sanitiser for £9 and just sold it for £94 on eBay."

One Twitter user - who noticed four inexpensive bottles of Lidl's hand sanitiser listed on eBay for £39.99 - took to social media to share her opinion.

She wrote: "50p Lidl hand sanitiser being sold at rip off prices while the shops are selling out of the stuff.

"They are clearly selling our due to folk buying to make ridiculous profit.

"Why is this even allowed on @eBay?"

"Don’t tell me this virus got people tryna (sic) sell hand sanitiser on eBay for a few bills.. please don’t, " one person tweeted.

However, Martin Lewis (journalist, presenter and 'money saving expert') said people don't need to remortgage their home for a bottle of hand sanitiser.

In a tweet he said: "To all those worried that hand sanitiser is sold out, it's worth noting...

"2019 study by the American Society for Microbiology, using running water and soap to wash your hands is more effective than a dab of gel" (via Guardian)".

In a later tweet he added: "By all of us just washing our hands, and being sensible, we reduce the contamination risk (of this and normal flu) for those with lung conditions, immune conditions or older members of society who are vulnerable."

A spokesperson from eBay said: "On our marketplace, eBay has been employing a combination of digital and manual surveillance tools to remove products marketed with the term 'coronavirus' which violates our policies regarding making unsubstantiated health claims.

"We are also taking action to mitigate the inflated price of listings on the site.”
