Ebay seller flogs £2 coin for £138 because of design error - check your change

A rare £2 coin has sold for £138 on eBay because it has a huge design flaw - making it valuable to collectors.

The coin has been accidentally struck on both sides so the writing looks like it has been doubled up.

One one side, the words have been minted twice and the Queen’s head is not in the centre of the coin.

The other side of the coin, which features the “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” design, also has the same minting error.

The eBay seller claims the piece was minted in 2003 and says they are “looking to reduce my error coin collection”.

It sold for a total of £138 on May 26 after attracting 23 bids.

Error coins can be particularly valuable to collectors as they could be a one-off, or one of just a handful.

But you should always be aware of fakes being sold on eBay so you don’t get scammed out of money for a coin that isn’t real.

You can get coins verified by the Royal Mint to check they're the real deal.

It's also worth keeping in mind that a coin is only ever really worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

It is hard for the Royal Mint to say exactly how many error coins could be in circulation, as it manufactures between three million and four million coins a day.

But with so many designs going through its system each day, you can see how mistakes happen - so it's worth keeping an eye out in your spare change for anything unusual.

This isn’t the only error coin that has sold for a mint on eBay in recent weeks.

A rare £1 coin that had also been “double minted” fetched £253 on the auction site.

Meanwhile, a coin expert said how this HG Wells £2 coin could be worth up to £1,000 due to a minting error.

What makes this particular version of the 2021 coin special is that it has a thicker yellow ring, wider than a normal £2.
