Gap Beauty has revived its iconic collection of eaux de parfum, bringing back a selection of scents that have long held a place in the memories of fragrance lovers.
Designed with the habits of a 21st century lifestyle in mind, the collection treats fragrance less as a single signature scent and more as a rotating wardrobe. Each eau de parfum is designed to be worn alone or layered with another to create a more personalised scent.
Contrary to what you might think, the perfumes may not be the exact replica of their ’90s counterparts, because the raw materials used then aren’t being utilised the same way now.
For example with the original Heaven scent that was launched in 1994, the polycyclic musk that was used then, and in many popular perfumes in the ’90s (yes, also in that opaque-bottled fragrance you are thinking of), has been shown to be resistant to biodegradation.
Nonetheless, the fragrances all still remain as close to their olfactory origins as possible.
Heaven: A cocooning musk and solar vanilla blend, brightened by juniper and cooled with cardamom. An amber note adds warmth and staying power, creating a soft yet luminous scent reminiscent of a dark, star-filled sky.
Grass trades the original’s freshly cut lawn freshness for a more restorative take on nature, making this the most different creation from the original. It pairs green notes and mandarin with soothing matcha — a scent straight out of the 21st century.
Dream: A warm musk built around bergamot, jasmine and cedarwood, with orange blossom and vibrant woods added to preserve its signature clean, fresh character. Perfumer Blanc describes Gap Dream as an expression of “optimism, freshness and simplicity”.
Om: This scent blends ginger, incense, sandalwood, musk and resin into a mysterious yet luminous affair. Staying close to the original, it carries an understated edge that feels contemporary, evoking the effortless cool of the Chelsea Hotel, vintage denim and a leather jacket.
Harmony: Lastly, the newest addition blends apricot nectar, gardenia and amber together for a sweet-fruity note.
Fronting the “Wear What You Feel” campaign is Victoria Pedretti, best known for her breakout role as Love Quinn in Netflix’s psychological thriller You. Pedretti appears in the campaign with a fresh, clean look that is synonymous to Gap’s understated brand heritage.
The fragrances are available in 10ml bottles for US$20 and 50ml bottles for $52 through Gap’s website.
