Eating on public transport should be banned and calories capped, says medical chief

Eating on public transport should be banned to stop children snacking, an expert has said.

Dame Sally Davies also wants MPs to cap the calories sold per person at cafés and takeaways.

And the ex-chief medical officer called for a ban on junk food ads at public venues to help tackle childhood obesity.

In her final report, Dame Sally, who stepped down on October 1, also asked for VAT to be removed from healthy food.

Public health officials are “nowhere near” meeting the target of halving childhood obesity in England by 2030.

Two-thirds of adults and a third of children are now overweight and the UK has the third highest obesity rate in Europe.

Dame Sally said: “Our environment has become very unhealthy. Children are suffering painful, potentially life-limiting diseases.

“Politicians need to be bold. No child should suffer from complications caused by avoidable type 2 diabetes, yet this is our new normal.

“We can fix childhood obesity but need the right commitment to make the healthier choice easy.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We will study the report and act on the evidence.”
