eat:Portishead Food festival cancelled as weather poses safety fears

A popular food festival has been cancelled due to the weekend's weather forecast.

Sarah Milner Simonds and her partner Bev have announced that eat:Portishead will no longer go ahead on Saturday (August 10).

The organisers said they made the decision with "heavy hearts" after looking at the Met Office forecast, which includes two weather warnings for wind and very strong winds.

Last year the event attracted more than 15,000 visitors in its inaugural outing at the Portishead marina.

In a statement, Mrs Milner Simonds wrote: "The Met Office’s current detailed forecast is that Saturday will see the exposed marina site battered, with a gale force wind of between 25-30mph and gusts of 45-55mph, all day.

"The forecast has a very high level of certainty as it is an area of low pressure causing the weather; more predictable than a front."

Mrs Milner Simonds added that the safety of the public and producers represented the "primary concerns".

The couple have organised food and drink festivals for seven years, in which time they have picked up a number of awards.
