EasyJet to cut up 30% of workforce and renegotiate airport fees as it resumes flying

EasyJet has announced plans to cut up to 30% of its workforce as it prepares to resume services next month.

The airline said it would be running at just 30% of total capacity for the rest of the year. It plans to start flying again from June 15 and is selling seats on routes including Edinburgh and Glasgow to London Gatwick.

But chief executive Johan Lundgren said easyJet would not fly to Italy under existing restrictions. He was quoted in Corriere della Sera as saying: "It would be impossible for companies to operate with only a third of the seats sold."

The company, whose board survived an attempt by founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou to oust four directors last week, said it is also renegotiating fees paid to airports, ground handling services providers and marketing agencies.

EasyJet said today: "To effect the restructure of our business, easyJet will shortly launch an employee consultation process on proposals to reduce staff numbers by up to 30%, reflecting the reduced fleet, the optimisation of our network and bases, improved productivity as well as the promotion of more efficient ways of working. We will launch the consultation process in the coming days."
