easyJet and BA cancellations at Glasgow Airport amidst bomb scare

Dozens of flights into and out of Glasgow Airport have been cancelled today.

The airport faced a bomb scare earlier this morning, with hundreds of customers left to stand in the airport's car park in the freezing cold while bomb squad specialists rushed into the travel terminal.

Officers were at the scene with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews and Royal Navy Bomb Disposal after the "suspicious" item was found at around 6am.

Shortly after noon chilled-to-the-bone passengers filtered back into the airport after it was given the all clear.

During the hours that the airport was shut down many people missed their scheduled flight times. Currently there are around 27 arrivals and departures that have been cancelled including routes operated by LoganAir, easyJet, Aer Lingus and British Airways.

It remains to be seen what kind of knock-on impact the cancellations will have on flights later in the day.

To check your flight's status, contact your airline directly and consult the airport's arrivals and departures page.

Police have since confirmed the 'suspicious item' was 'innocent in nature', and said there is no wider risk to the public.

A statement said: "Following examination of the item by the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD), it was confirmed that it posed no risk to the public and was innocent in nature.

Ryanair had to cancel flights this morning (Daily Record)

"All areas of the airport are in the process of being re-opened."

The airport's car park played host to a miserable and anxious scene this morning as chilly customers waited to see if they'd be able to catch their flights, the Daily Record reported.

Carol and Billy Martin were set to be flying on the 11.30am easyJet flight to Gran Canaria with their teenage daughter and her friend, who were hoping to get a four-day break from studying in the sunshine.

The family resigned themselves to the fact that they’ll be heading home to Lanark rather than boarding the flight.

Carol, aged in her fifties, said: “We assume that we’re not getting on holiday and that the flight will be cancelled.

“We arrived not long ago but there’s a backlog of thousands of people. It’s been several hours now so the authorities have probably ascertained that it’s something quite serious."

Customers were seen shrouded in foil blankets in a bid to keep the 5C Glasgow chill at bay, while Salvation Army volunteers handed out hot drinks.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: “Police Scotland have confirmed this morning’s incident had been stood down at approximately midday.

"Our staff are now in the process of welcoming passengers back into the terminal and providing any assistance where required. We would like to thank our passengers for their continued patience.”

Shortly after 11am easyJet told a customer on Twitter: "We have not been briefed on the current situation at the airport.

"Our operations team is working on a solution for travellers whose flights were effected. For now, standard policy will apply."

Logan Air, easyJet, British Airways and Aer Lingus have been contacted about the disruption.
