easyJet responds to 'backless seats' claim that went viral on Twitter

An plane passenger has been pictured on a seat without a back - an image which prompted outrage on social media.

Twitter user Matthew Harris was travelling from Luton to Geneva, Switzerland, earlier today when he noticed the unusual sight, as reported by Mirror Online

Mr Harris posted a picture of a woman sitting in a row of seats without backs.

Describing the scene as "unacceptable", Mr Harris wrote: "easyJet beats @Ryanair to have backless seats. How can this be allowed?"

But easyjet sought to reassure anyone worried about the apparent practice.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “No passengers were permitted to sit in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting repair.

"Safety is our highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all safety guidelines.”

When Mr Harris published his picture online, the airline asked him to remove it.

Addressing Mr Harris in a tweet, easyJet said: "Thanks for bringing this to our attention, before we can investigate this could I ask you to remove the photograph & then DM us more info regarding this, so we can best assist you".

Mr Harris replied: "Absolutely not. This is a real photo of a plane currently descending to Geneva."

Social media users expressed outrage over the backless seats, labelling them "absurd" and "illegal".

One person said: "Surely that's a massive risk for neck injury on take off and landing (apart from everything else that's wrong with this)."
