EasyJet probe after woman wakes from nap to discover she is on wrong flight

A woman woke up from her plane nap to discover she was on the wrong easyJet flight.

Gemma Cargin had been trying to travel to Belfast but woke up to find herself on the way to Gibraltar.

Airline easyJet have now apologised to the teacher for her major detour as she travelled to the south coast of Spain, reports Belfast Live.

Gemma, who works as a teacher in Manchester but is from Banbridge in Northern Ireland, boarded a flight at Manchester Airport on Sunday.

Despite her boarding pass being scanned by staff at Manchester Airport, no one noticed that she was boarding the wrong plane.

Gemma said: “I woke up from my nap and I looked at the time, and I just asked ‘When are we landing, are we landing soon?'

“They told me we were landing in an hour and fifteen minutes - and I said ‘Is this flight not going to Belfast?'

“They told me it was going to Gibraltar. I said: 'Guys, I'm on the wrong flight'.”

In a statement addressing the incident, a spokesperson for the airline said: “ easyJet works closely with all of our airports to ensure the safety of all passengers.

“We are investigating with the airport and our ground handling partner at Manchester how Miss Cargin was able travel on the wrong flight.

"As soon as the mistake was realised, it was arranged for het to fly back to Manchester and on to Belfast, her original intended destination.

“Miss Cargin was looked after by our team throughout and provided with refreshments.

“We would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

After arriving in Gibraltar, Gemma was allowed to exit the aircraft for air and but sightseeing had to be done from the vicinity of the plane so she would not have to quarantine as she re-entered the UK.

She was flown back on the same plane to Manchester before finally arriving in Belfast a whole twelve hours later than expected.

Although it was not the short 40 minute flight she was expecting, the 25-year-old was able to find some positives out of the experience.
